Why Rescue a Golden Retriever

Rescuing a Golden Retriever can be a rewarding experience for many reasons. Golden Retrievers are known for their loyal, affectionate, and loving nature, making them wonderful companions for anyone. These dogs are also highly intelligent and easy to train, making them great pets for families with children.

By rescuing a Golden Retriever, you are providing a second chance to a dog in need. Many of these dogs end up in shelters or rescue organizations due to unforeseen circumstances such as their owners moving or not being able to care for them anymore. By adopting a golden retriever, you are giving them a new life with a loving family who will cherish them.

Moreover, rescuing a golden retriever can also be cost-effective as most rescue organizations cover the initial medical care and vaccinations that the dog requires. This alone can save adopters hundreds of dollars.

Before getting a Golden Retriever. Mind Set

If you decide that you want to adopt a golden retriever from a rescue o shelter, there is some things that as family you need to consider before adopting.

The majority of this dogs comes from difficult situations, where at some point, they have been mistreated or neglected.

Should you own a Golden?

At this point the good question is Am I ready to rescue?

Do I want to adopt because I want a dog? My dog needs a friend? My kids want a dog? I want a new companion animal. OR I want to rescue because it is sad to see how many dogs have been failed, and I want to help one who could benefit from what I have to offer. This last thing is the mindset that most of the rescues are looking for.

The majority of people think that owning a golden is easy. People think a golden is what movies describe, and while in most cases it is, we need to understand the breed before adopting or buying. We can not adopt or buy a pet without taking the decision very seriously.

Goldens aren’t suitable for every family.  It’s important to consider some key qualities of a golden before deciding to own one.  For some people, these qualities are “features”.  For others, they are “bugs”.  Either way, it is vital that you examine your lifestyle, needs, and wants to see if a golden is right for you.

What to consider before owning a GR

  1. Size: Goldens are medium to large-sized animals. (males range from 23 – 24 inches and weigh proportionally from 65-75 pounds. Females stand around 21.5 – 22.5 inches and weigh 55-65 pounds.)
  2. Exercise: Goldens were developed as a sporting breed able to handle a day’s hunting routinely. They need to have hard consistent exercise daily (20-30 minutes twice a day is usually sufficient) or they may have difficulty adjusting to the “calm house pet” role expected by most owners. You must have a plan to give your golden enough exercise on a daily basis or both of you will be miserable. The younger the golden, the more exercise they generally need.
  3. Velcro Dog: Goldens are prone to bond with their humans, they love to be with us all the time, and follow you as a shadow. They must be near their humans to be happy.  If you don’t want that much togetherness, a golden one isn’t for you.
  4. Leashes: You may have visions of letting your dog play fetch in an open field or running free on the beach.  As a sporting dog they are easily distracted by birds, animals or moving objects; if you want that kind of liberty you will both to put the effort and do training to archive it.
  5. Shedding: A golden Shedd. Preriot. Brushing every other day is to your advantage. If you the kind of person that require a crystal clear house, a golden is not the dog for you unless you like to do a lot of cleaning.  You will always have dog hair around, especially in rugs, on furniture, and OH YES, occasionally even in your food.
  6. Health: Goldens are prone to allergies, skin problems, cancer and hypothyroidism and you may have to spend a fair amount on vet care over the life of a golden. Common inherited health issues are hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, various eye problems and heart disease. Expect your annual vet visit to run about $350 for basic care including an annual heartworm test.
  7. Care: Feeding one medium-sized dog for a year will run you about $50-$70 a month( more if you consider going raw or homemade). Goldens must be fed high-quality, premium food to prevent costly skin problems. Also you you will need to spend on preventive care
  8. Grooming: Goldens can be adequately groomed at home without expensive equipment.  Grooming includes brushing, bathing, trimming hair from the pads of the feet, light trimming on ears, tails and back legs when necessary, and trimming nails.  You won’t have to pay expensive grooming bills and Is not recommend shaving goldens – it’s not good for them.
  9. Outside: Goldens make poor outside dogs. Especially in Florida, they develop skin problems and flea allergies if kept outside. They can have a heatstroke in summer due to the high temperatures. They frequently develop thunderstorm anxiety. As sporting dogs they are easily able to dig out of a fence or sometimes climb over it when left outside for long periods of unsupervised time because they want to be with people. They frequently develop behavior problems when they are kept separated from their families. A happy golden is an inside dog.
